Lasco vs. Ente
Lasco and Ente both offer private photo backup with end-to-end encryption, but they use different storage models.
Ente is a managed photo cloud service. It stores your encrypted library on its infrastructure, replicating it across three cloud locations. Ente provides the storage, web app, desktop apps, sharing, and photo-library features.
Lasco, on the other hand, is only a mobile app. It connects directly to file storage you choose and encrypts your library before upload. There is no Lasco server to deploy or maintain.
Comparison
| Lasco | Ente | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Mobile app that connects directly to your storage | Managed, end-to-end encrypted photo cloud service, used through its web access or companion app |
| Where photos live | Storage you choose: an S3 bucket, Lasco Cloud, and soon a NAS or USB drive | Ente's managed cloud storage, replicated across three locations |
| Server to set up | No | No |
| Server and database maintenance | No | No |
| Backups | Add a dedicated backup remote in Lasco. A backup is no different from a usual sync. | Ente manages three encrypted replicas of your library |
| Replication | Easily sync the same library to several S3 buckets or NAS devices in different locations | Ente manages replication across its three cloud locations |
| Cloud option | Optional Lasco Cloud remote, the easiest way to get two S3 remotes in different locations | Ente Cloud is the recommended approach; self-hosting is technically possible |
| Encryption | Photos and metadata are encrypted on your device before upload | Photos and metadata are end-to-end encrypted |
| Web app and sharing | Not available today | Full web app, desktop apps, sharing, and multi-user features |
| Smart search and ML analysis | Planned | Available |
| Maturity | Still early, with a focused and limited feature set | Robust and feature-complete |
Which one should you choose?
Choose Lasco if you want private, encrypted photo backup using storage you select and control. It is a good fit if you want to replicate your library across your own S3 storage, NAS devices, or, soon, USB backups without managing a server.
Choose Ente if you want a mature, managed and end-to-end encrypted photo service. It is the better fit if you want desktop and web apps, sharing, smart search, and managed replication without configuring your own storage.
Ente is much more mature today. Lasco is still early, and useful features such as ML photo analysis are on the roadmap.
